The logical structure of the eight-legged essays, as R. Kent Guy observes, resembles the deductive reasoning style in the American collegiate debate format, but it values a quite different kind of proof when someone is making an argument: “As the burden of proof in an essay in the [modern] Western tradition would be borne by evidence, in Chinese examination essays it was borne by elegantly stated perception” (170). Exemplifying what Guy means by “perception” are the annotations of the Four Books by Zhu Xi (1130–1200), a neo-Confucian exegete.
Even in imperial court debates, writing was much preferred. The connection between speaking and writing would enhance college students’ deliberative engagement with the politics of republican China (see chapter 2). Another striking feature of the textbooks is the predominance of the modes of discourse. All three texts devote a large section to description, narration, exposition, and argumentation, the hallmark of what was later called current-traditional rhetoric in the United States. As described by Berlin, current-traditional rhetoric originated in the faculty psychology of eighteenth-century rhetoric and kept its most mechanical features.
The primary goals of these schools were to train Christian leaders, provide religious training for Christian children, and convert non-Christians (Sinclair). In the beginning, these schools were small, teaching only Christian subjects and only in Chinese. Soon they included Chinese classics in their curricula because teaching Christianity exclusively did not attract Chinese families who valued traditional classical education for procuring social prestige. 16 There was hardly a place for English in mission schools until the late nineteenth century.
