There are expenses, real expenses for heating oil and food. We stopped my piano lessons shortly after Grandpa died. Like Aunt Jean, we just get by now. Jimmy likes show tunes. And big band tunes. He’s partial to Glen Miller. I turn the radio up when he’s on, but even so, it’s not as calming for Jimmy as my voice singing Glen Miller. I hand Jimmy a wooden spoon. He beats the table and keeps pretty good time. I sing into a whisk. We make such a racket that we don’t hear Aunt Jean come in. She’s been standing watching us for some time, I think.
My revenge is that I never listen or never appear to listen, but I always know the answer to the teacher’s questions. The teacher calls me, trying to catch me up, but she never can. Since the beginning of the school year, it feels like the teacher is always trying to trip me up. She makes a mission of trying to trip me up. By the third week, she leaves me alone. I wear her down. All my marks are A+. I don’t bother about school, really. I used to love, love, love it, but since Jimmy’s accident … well … it doesn’t seem very important.
In fact, my bedroom and Jimmy’s are separated by a fire wall. ” All my life, I’ve spent more time in Aunt Jean’s house than my own, because my mom works crazy shifts at the button factory. Aunt Jean gets paid to watch me. Like I said, on the last Thursday of the summer holidays, Uncle Ted parked in front of Aunt Jean’s half of the semi. All the kids streamed out of their houses like ants to a picnic to see Uncle Ted’s honey of a car; a new, baby blue-and-white Thunderbird convertible with fins like wings.
