Each German infantryman carried 120 rounds in his ammunition pouches, plus 30 in his pack. An infantry company usually carried an additional 70 rounds per man in its supply wagon. While the troops were issued with bayonets, the German Army no longer regarded ‘cold steel’ as very useful on the modern battlefield. The German Army on the Eastern Front was lower in priority than the forces deployed on the Western Front and this was particularly noticeable in terms of equipment. By March 1915, some German Reserve and Landwehr units on the Eastern Front would even begin to receive captured Mosin-Nagant rifles as replacements for lost weapons, as well as obsolete Gew 88 rifles.
Mackensen opted for a piecemeal frontal assault against Russian positions which he could not see. At 0600hrs he committed three infantry regiments from 35. Infanterie-Division massed against what he believed to be the left flank of a Russian division (it was 25th Infantry Division). Here, German artillery was able to achieve fire superiority and support a successful infantry attack against Russian troops who were not yet entrenched or fully supported by their own artillery. After three hours of combat, part of the Russian division retreated, exposing the right flank of the neighbouring 27th Infantry Division, but some units – such as 25th Infantry Division’s 100th Infantry Regiment Ostrov – conducted solid rearguard actions.
Göritten was bounded to the north and east by two streams, which impeded dismounted movement in or out of the village. On the western side of Göritten, trees and underbrush obstructed direct observation into the village. By early November, Göritten had suffered considerable damage from both armies moving through the area and some buildings had been fired or broken up for firewood. There were some infantry positions dug around the village’s perimeter, but not yet true trench works. The area surrounding Göritten is mostly flat farmland, particularly to the west of the village.
