A small minority are prodigal suns-ten or a hundred thousand times more luminous than our own. A larger number are equal to the sun in power. And the vast majority are far weaker, producing light at only a few thousandths or even a few ten-thousandths of the solar rate. How a light varies with time is also a clue to the nature of its source. The lighthouse emits brief bursts of light with long pauses between them; the airplane warning beacons brighten and dirn once every few seconds; floating marker buoys keep time to a still different rhythm.
