For Bosse (as for Harrison), Greek tragedy forces the modern world to confront its demons (Müller-Schöll 2004: 51–3). ’ 27 Notes 1 I owe thanks for helpful conversations and correspondence on ‘Live Classics’ to many, especially Alan Bowman, Alan Davey, Simon Goldhill, Edith Hall, Charlotte Higgins, Ian Ruffell, Peter Stothard, Oliver Taplin and Peter Parsons. 2 There is a complex textual history to this play, and significantly different versions. Tony Harrison, The Trackers of Oxyrhynchus (Harrison, 1990) publishes the version of the play first played at Delphi in 1988; the second published edition, in 1991, includes both the version played at Delphi and at the National Theatre ‘revival’ in 1990.

It is, however, in changing interpretations of the ancient texts that research in classics has had most to contribute to Greek drama on stage, and to its power to affect and attract modern and diverse audiences. Research in the classical world is neither a narrowly antiquarian pursuit, nor is it a desperate search for cheap contemporary relevance. At its best, it sets up a dialogue between our own concerns and those of the ancients, prompting new understandings of the ancient world as our concerns change – and vice versa.
