9 Ironically, while the Potawatomi trading party enjoyed the accommodations of Montreal, their villages at Green Bay were visited by other Frenchmen. During the early summer of 1668, Nicolas Perrot and Toussaint Baudry, two traders from Lake Superior, arrived at Green Bay, where the remaining Potawatomi villagers treated them with almost religious adoration. Potawatomi warriors lavished gifts upon the Frenchmen, carrying Perrot and Baudry aloft on their shoulders, while the Potawatomi women and children seemed awestruck, refusing even to approach the bearded strangers.
In early September, 1679, the Griffon arrived at Washington Island, where La Salle's agents had stockpiled the furs in the Potawatomi village. The Potawatomis on the island were led by Onanghisse (Shimmering Light), who earlier had visited Montreal and was anxious to cooperate with the Frenchmen. Onanghisse and his people welcomed La Salle and entertained the French in the Potawatomi village during the four days needed to load the ship and prepare it for the return voyage to the east. 22 Shortly after the Griffon's departure, La Salle and a small party of his followers also left Onanghisse's village and voyaged down the western shore of Lake Michigan.
