What matters, and all that matters, is that a statement be accepted. For that, one must persuade, and hence must master rhetoric, which is the art of persuasion. Whatever other objections we might have to McClosky's arguments, we can agree, regarding science as a system of discourse, that 'good science is good conversation'. It is not at all clear however that McClosky's purpose is to improve and raise that level of conversation.
