He didn’t hit me hard—my pride was stung more than my rear, since I was too old, in my opinion, for a spanking. ” My gaze moved from the sled to a tall wood shed twenty paces from the driveway near the south corner of the property. I had personally chopped and stacked enough wood to fill that shed several times over. Starting at age ten my father would send me to chop wood for an hour or two every time I said something negative about golf, and if I so much as blinked when he told me to grab an axe and get to work, the punishment was doubled.
He paused briefly before answering, and when he spoke, his words were full of pain and regret. “I thought you were asleep—you had been. ” He paused again. “Come get in the car, Augusta. ” I reluctantly did as he said and we drove back to his house. Neither of us spoke along the way. When we got there, he led me through the house to my old bedroom, which had since been converted to a den. Against one wall was the wooden chest that Dad had always kept locked up at the foot of his bed. He grabbed a key from the top drawer of his credenza, unlocked the chest, and flipped open the lid.
London’s lip curled up at the edges, but he didn’t say anything in response. I breathed out heavily. “You know what? Let’s just get this over with. ” He nodded. ” I mumbled under my breath as I picked up the new bag and started walking to the first tee box. It was still early enough in Vermont’s golfing season that there was no waiting to tee off. The fairways and greens in late April are so soggy that everyone but the nuts like my father stays away for at least a few more weeks. When we got to the first tee, I took some practice swings with my driver.
