Middlebrow reading can be sentimental, but its central goal is emotional engagement. Radway writes that for members of the Book-of-the-Month Club, reading was ‘an event defined by affective response and reaction’ (1997, 262). Emotional engagement with literary culture remains one of the dominant features of the new literary middlebrow.
