If not renewed, protection expires after 28 years. 2 Copyright Protection Periods (continued) If the work was created: 1964–1977 The term of protection is: 28 years plus renewal for 67 years If the work was created: 1978 and after The term of protection is: The life of the author plus 70 years. If a work has multiple authors, the protection under the most recent law (1976) is the life of the longest-living author plus 70 years. If the author is anonymous, or if the work is made for hire, the 1976 law protects the work for 95 years from the year of first publication or 120 years from the year of creation, whichever expires first.

The new law, however, provided no guidance on how to weigh those factors. The problem of determining infringement when a photocopy machine is used emerged in the 1960s in a dispute between the federal government and the Williams and Wilkins Company, a publishing firm. The governmental agency involved was the National Library of Medicine, which had a practice of freely copying articles from journals for patrons. When Williams and Wilkins heard of this practice, it asked the library to pay two cents per page for the articles it was duplicating, claiming that the practice affected the profit potential for the journals being copied.

It was granted to Samuel Winslow for a unique process for manufacturing salt. The first patent on a mechanical device in the western hemisphere was issued to Joseph Jenkes in 1646 for a water-propelled machine that was used to manufacture scythes. In this invention a water wheel powered a hammer that beat metal into usable implements. Previously, scythes were manufactured by hand. The first United States patent was issued on July 31, 1790, to Samuel Hopkins for his new process of making potash, an ingredient in soap.
