Educational “how-to” films such as Choosing Children began circulating at the same time that parenting support groups formed—many of them organized and sponsored by the beloved Lyon-Martin organization in San Francisco. Out of these earlier pioneering efforts the 1990s witnessed a veritable growth industry explosion of popular and thoughtful advice books, legal aid services, formal gay-parent organizations, and summer camps for children. In short, gay and lesbian communities mobilized to help engineer the gay family revolution that has now secured for gay families an irrevocable, perhaps vanguard position in the increasingly diverse and as yet unsettled array of postmodern kinship arrangements.
