The shifting image of the Bildungsroman's hero evokes more explicitly a changing concept of man developed during the nineteenth century. The "postclassical" Bildungsroman of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, David H. Miles argues, portrays an "intensive-confessional" hero, in contrast to the "extensive-picaresque" hero in Goethe's prototypical Bildungsroman, Wilhelm Meister. Whereas the earlier mode emphasizes the picaresque dimension of the hero's experience in ''linear, episodic, and chronological" time, the later mode stresses the reconstruction of the self through memory, recollection, and reflection.

Consequently, I had both the delight of freely exploring her fictional territory and the frustration of groping for direction. As my mentor and dissertation adviser, Mary Suzanne Schriber provided invaluable assistance, discussing specific thematic and narrative concerns with me and urging me to consider larger theoretical issues.
