The Causes of Pain 39 Each single sensory fiber is special in two ways. First, it is interested only in its own target area. Second, it is interested only in particular events. The very large fibers are excited only by light pressure. Some fibers respond only to warming or to cooling. Some small myelinated fibers (that is, those enclosed in a substance called myelin) respond only to intense pressure; obviously these are of special importance with respect to pain. Many of the smallest fibers, the C fibers, respond to pressure, to high temperature (above 110 degrees Fahrenheit), and to abnormal chemieals.
On the face, it attacks one of the three divisions of the trigeminal nerve; most often, this is the division that supplies the forehead, so that inflammation and pain occur on one side of the forehead and on the eyelids, but not on the rest of the face.
