The board, under this new president and vice president, began to 42 CHAPTER 3 micromanage the district and get involved in every aspect of school administration. Some members even camped outside the offices of building principals for hours just talking to students, teachers, and parents and “observing” the daily operations of the school. Lincoln schools became not very happy places for most of the administrators and teachers, who did not appreciate the constant intrusions into their hallowed halls.
Then, the board president announced he was resigning from the board, retiring from his job, and moving to his other home in Florida. I was stunned, and so was everyone else. You could cut the tension in the room with a knife. I looked out at the people present, and all I could see were heads shaking and eyes rolling. One person from the crowd stood up and yelled, “How could you do this? This new superintendent is your person! You picked her with no input from us . . and now you are leaving! ” About two months later, I was told that this whole thing was orchestrated by the board president and vice president.
Two hours later, I had filled about fifteen pages 28 CHAPTER 2 worth of notes that included who was sleeping with whom, why one of the administrators at the building level needed to be fired (“he is way too political and knows way too many people”), which academic programs needed to be cut, which sports teams needed more money, and why I should never, ever trust the president of the teachers’ union. I didn’t find out until several months after I had accepted the position with the district that the other board members did not know that we had gone to dinner.
