Psychoanalysis could come up with individual personal episodes of the most intimate nature, but these were in response to an explanation already given, in which individual feelings existed on a standardized basis.
So what psychological value could such dreams provide? I found some answers, late in life, through examining my own dire fantasies, though they were waking ones and not precognitive. Some of us more than others, it seems, are struck by a sense of life's vulnerability, and though we may learn to display the hearty, everyday manner of our more blustery neighbors, we quail, cringe, and protest against characteristics of life that others quite take for granted. A bird with a broken wing; a caught fish, dumb mouth open; the household kitten trailing the dead mouse, blood-spattered, yet protected from crime by his innocence; and the bouts of illness with which children are often afflicted—these injustices forever capture our notice.
The trouble is, of course, that this correspondence is not measurable in usual terms. To dismiss it for that reason, however, would be to rob the world of its invaluable artistic heritage and accomplishment. While I became, in life, more and more disillusioned with the results of paranormal investigations, therefore, I became in time more and more convinced that the "fictionalized" events of many séance rooms—those spooky dramas formed of, desperate hopes, emotional frenzies, creative fabrications and subconscious dramatizations; those morality plays in miniature, occurring in neighborhood after neighborhood—stood for inner realities.
