It is the subconscious link with what he has lost that makes these things so irritating to him. The point has been missed by critics, but it reinforces the story as a whole. Refracted through Forster’s irony is the implication that Mr Lucas might have done better to stay and die in his moment of vision rather than return and live out an irritable existence which has no coherence or beauty. This gives the ‘moment of vision’ a tragic undertone. The vision cannot last (even if Mr Lucas had stayed in Greece without being killed it could hardly have lasted for very long) and for an old man the only fitting complement to it is death.

Forster has always been suspicious of the idea of progress and its vociferous supporters. 20 The First World War killed the complacency of this attitude without substituting any other belief. ‘The Other Side of the Hedge’ is thus a counterpart to ‘The Road from Colonus’. The landscape on the other side of the hedge is intended to give some sort of permanence to that which Mr Lucas saw when he entered the hollow tree.
