The concept of wounding in schools has been examined by Blase and Blase (2003) who identified three levels of mistreatment/abuse of teachers by school leaders. These ranged from indirect and moderately aggressive behaviours, (Level One) to direct and severely aggressive behaviours (Level Three). Wounding leaders are found to induce feelings of fear, anger, depression and isolation in their victims. In similar vein, Ackerman and Maslin-Ostrowski’s (2004) research on school leaders recognises a thin line between wounding and wounded leaders, a line that can be easily crossed where there is an absence of emotional awareness and understanding of self.
This is the paradoxical nature of change as it is experienced in relationship. Such relationships gradually enable individuals to emerge from the emotional isolation of their defensiveness, show their true feelings and experience the newness of being accepted, affirmed and appreciated for their difference, rather than judged, labelled and ostracised. This order of relationship is therefore important for the development of school communities in which people feel safe enough to learn and grow. , (2002) talk of an ‘aliveness’ that can emerge within community members as the relational conditions support authenticity between people leading to greater trust in the community and in the processes of change.
