The postmodern conception of history, of course, repudiated this understanding of how history works: from Hayden White to Graham Swift, one of the most salient lessons of postmodernism was to be wary of narrativizations of the past, especially those involving a linear or chronological account of it. ) And finally, of course, the idea of ‘after’ was itself always already present in the ‘post’ of ‘postmodernity’, so the phrase ‘after postmodernism’ is arguably tautologous. The solution opted for by Klaus Stierstorfer in his 2003 volume, and by Ihab Hassan in his contribution to it included herein, is to spatialize the temporality implied by the preposition ‘after’, by adopting ‘beyond’ in its stead.
This argument is expanded by other critics later in this section: Alan Kirby elaborates on the effect of digitalization in supplanting the postmodern, and Jeffrey T. Nealon explores the impact of globalization. Interestingly, the same ideas underpin some of the formulations explored in Part Two: automodernism and digimodernism emphasize the role of digital technologies in the outmoding of postmodernism, while altermodernism flags up the role of globalization. He argues that the contemporary arts now tend towards articulations of the values of truth, sincerity, spirituality, and authenticity rather than the postmodern shibboleths of irony and relativism.
