For the orthodox who refused to follow the new line, the change of name and direction spelled the end of the party they had known; conversely the new-named party’s enemies had everything to gain from claiming that this was still the same party. It is none the less worth drawing up the balance between rupture and continuity, since what was involved was really an extreme case of the tensions to which any political party is exposed at one point or another in its life. First, a factor counting strongly on the side of rupture with the past was the undeniable fact that one of the primary planks in the ideology of these parties had been removed.

From about the time of the signing of the Helsinki Accords in 1975 new patterns of dissent emerged in east-central Europe which were able to gain a purchase in the hostile environment of communist rule. This evolution of dissent was to feed the formation of new political parties after the watershed of 1989. The historical roots of the latter are to that extent shallow. They embody what will be termed in the discussion of the final part of this chapter the liberation myth. They merit a preliminary word at this point.

In January 1990 the Polish United Workers’ Party accomplished the same feat, this leading to the creation of Social Democracy of the Polish Republic, and of a smaller formation, the Polish Social-Democratic Union. The Bulgarian Communist Party, for its part, never dissolved itself, but at the end of that same month of January 1990 changed its name on the basis of a party referendum, becoming the Bulgarian Socialist Party. It had in fact maintained an unbroken organisational continuity from its origin in the Bulgarian SocialDemocratic Party created in 1883, though it had already passed through one name change when it became the Bulgarian Communist Party in the aftermath of the Russian revolution.
