That is, it is neither the case 34 SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE HEAD that middle-class families are cynical individualists who recognise that they contribute to and indeed are motivated by, the creation of social inequalities; nor that they are merely trying to do the best for their own children and have no real sense that their individual actions might have larger social consequences.
Within all of this, in making decisions about the schooling of their children, the families represented here are engaged in complex cobbling together of public and private values, all a part of what van Zanten and Veleda (2001) call ‘ethical bricolage’, although the value of ‘putting the family first’, in one way or another, remains the centrepiece of this decision-making.
