They feared that the whole proposal was nothing but a ruse, that Lewis and his men were in collusion with their enemies to draw them into a trap. But in the end, Lewis was able to induce a sufficient number of Lemhis to agree to accompany him, promising the potential of supplying them with something that they wanted as desperately as the expedition needed horses: the firearms and ammunition that would help to offset the balance of power with the Hidatsas, Blackfeet, and other tribes that had been raiding the Lemhis.
