D: 1855-1914 Both the MMP and the MFP chose to wear the cavalry 'pillbox' forage cap as undress headgear in the late 19th century, although the infantry 'Glengarry' would have been more appropriate for the MFP. 01 depicts the undress uniform worn by NCOs of the MFP when on duty in garrisons in Britain. 02 shows a sergeant of the MMP in the khaki drill unifomi worn during the early part of the Boer War of 1899-1902. His cork 'foreign service' helmet has a khaki drill cover, he wears cord breeches and puttees, but otherwise his insignia and equipment is much the same as that worn in Britain.

Apart from the red facings to his uniform, he bears a remarkable resemblance to a civilian policeman. He wears the infantry-pattern 'home service' cork helmet, brown leather sling belt and gauntlets. Note his 'MMP' brassard denoting that he is on duty, his whistle and chain worn from his second tunic button, and his badge of appointment (rank) worn on the right sleeve only. His medals are for service in Egypt, 1882. Note also his 1856-pattern saddle, 1860-pattern bridle - both 'universal' patterns - and his 1864- pattern cavalry sword.
