Sundstrom makes a good case that these designs are the product of Late Prehistoric period Siouan speaking peoples who migrated into the Black Hills area from the Oneota culture. Dated portable objects from the postcontact period can also be used for dating. Early explorers, traders, missionaries, and military men often collected painted robes, decorated shirts, and ledger drawings from Northwestern Plains Indians. Several hundred of these items have survived in museums, archives, and private collections.
But it could not be directly linked to a specific petroglyph. D. 1100. At the Simanton petroglyph boulder in northern Montana, ceremonial offerings relating to the boulder were dated to the Late Prehistoric period (Park 1990), providing a minimum date for use of the site after the motifs were carved.
