Syeda has worked as a parent tutor in other London primary schools in Camden and Tower Hamlets – but finds the parents at Edith Neville, particularly the Bangladeshi women, the most difficult to involve. ‘I thought, being from a Bangladeshi background myself, they might predominate’, she says. ’ She puts it down to cultural barriers to women’s involvement in the wider world. ‘They say “I can’t come, because I have to make tea for my mother-in-law” or something like that.
And I choose this one’, she says. When offered a post as bilingual assistant, she did not hesitate. ‘I have been working in Foundation stage for three years, thanks to my daughter.
