Newcombe was unable to collect actual monuments from the village because of its remoteness, but he did collect many of the items that had been brought from the village by the last inhabitants. He also collected works created later at Skidegate and Victoria by refugee artists such as Tom Price. Although a few poles had been removed from Ninstints in 1938 and taken to Prince Rupert, serious efforts to salvage monuments from the village did not begin until after the Second World War. In 1947 Marius Barbeau led a National Museum of Man expedition which visited most of the Haida villages of the Queen Charlotte Islands, including Ninstints.
