It was fought where the borders of modern Israel, Syria, and Jordan meet, east of the Sea of Galilee at the Yarmuk Gorge. It pitted the new power of militant Arab Islam against a superior army of the Byzantine Empire. And it ended in a spectacular Arab victory. It must rank as one of the key battles in world history, because the Arabs took control of an area encompassing today’s Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan (while another, contemporary military campaign took today’s Iraq from the Sassanid-Persian Empire).
Communist Party (PCE) became increasingly powerful, and put a conservative brake on what it denounced as ‘ultra-left excesses’.
