This ebook is a set of papers derived from a convention on membranes held on the Columbus Laboratories of Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio, on October 20 and 21,1969. whilst a choice is made to sponsor a membrane convention, the matter instantly arises as to what point of the expertise should be emphasised. there have been a number of choices from which to settle on. The place of work of Saline Water, for instance, has been sup porting for a few years a huge quantity of study at the desalination of sea and brackish water. in truth, have been it no longer for this attempt, the convention which led to this ebook may perhaps not really were held. Regardless, you could now not simply decide to carry a convention on water desalting as the topic is sufficiently coated within the literature, and every year meetings are subsidized by means of the investment company. different executive firms, in particular The nationwide center and Lung Institutes and The nationwide Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic ailments, have supported a large variety of study courses concerning using membranes for biomedical units invaluable in blood oxygenation and kidney augmentation or substitute. back, those teams have their very own shops for disseminating learn effects. nonetheless different offerings existed between such components as permeation methods for petroleum separations, complex or novel membrane procedure suggestions, or characterization of membranes - morphology, permeation prop erties, and so forth. , - or organic membranes. None of those parts looked as if it would offer simply the perfect technological emphasis.

Polymer molecular weight and polymer orientation affect the rates of relaxation{l8,23). The objective of this study, therefore, was to determine the effect of molecular weight and subtle changes in orientation on the rate of solvent crazing of polystyrene by normal pentane. In 1963 Rudd(18) measured the rate of relaxation of polystyrene samples of molecular weight 100,000 to 300,000 exposed to butanol at unit activity under an initial stress of 1000 psi. Relaxation rates dropped by a factor of 106 with increasing molecular weight over this rather narrow range of molecular weights which was related to greater hindrance to chain uncoiling and viscous flow in the higher molecular weight samples.
