If Jeffords took General Page 7 Howard to Cochise, there would be no question this time about whether he had carded out his contract. Lt. Joseph Alton Sladen and Gen. Oliver Otis Howard were the final two players on the envoy's team. It was hard work toiling under the southern Arizona sun, and I am not fond of getting my hands dirty without good cause. ) The second development that resulted from my visit to Rucker Canyon occurred when I met James A. McDonald, a Forest Service archaeologist who came from Tucson to spend a few days at Camp Rucker. The journal of Capt. Joseph Alton Sladen was the first thing Jim McDonald and I discussed. " He then went on to suggest that I should be the person to prepare the journal for publication.
