Students should be skilled in writing-putting those facts into the forms of writing that are acceptable to news organizations. Students should also have some knowledge of how to present their information to the public: they should know the rudiments of editing in the broadest sense of the term. There has been little disagreement about any of this and practically no new approaches to the teaching of joumalistic skills.
Most teachers share that view. considering it adequate to teach little more than basic skills in journalism courses. Many others. however, are unconvinced that the primary function of education is to teach occupational skills or that the role of university is simply to provide workers for an industry. They believe education must help students to understand a complex world and to develop intellectually. The extreme effect that those differences can produce was illustrated in the program the Allied Daily Newspapers organization instituted in 1986.
