The overall pragmatist belief in the rule of empirical evidence over theoretical principles is keenly present in institutionalized service learning. Furthermore, according to Dewey’s (1938) model, the need for learning should be personal—the learner needs to care about the learning. Then the learner needs to go out and try interventions in the world and collect evidence on their effects. It is quite easy to see how such a philosophy leads faculty to send their students out to find their own institutionalized service learning opportunities and treat communities as “laboratories” where the students try things.

Among the valuable examples of true experiential learning is a program in British Columbia, Canada, where medical students attend an Aboriginal cultural camp and learn alongside tribal youth about the tribal culture from elders.
