As Tolstoy explains in a famous passage comparing the conceit of the European nations, all the nations have different reasons for their self-confidence but Germans are by far the worst, for ‘only Germans could base their self-confidence on an abstract idea – on science, that is, the supposed possession of absolute truth’ (WP, 757).
