For * Rousseau the musician',33 'order' means the mutual harmony of parts, concord, an absence of conflict, obedience to universal laws. Yet, his writings on music show that it is not harmony in the sense of a 'sequence of chords which obeys the laws of modulation'34 which is most important for him. He thinks of melody as something which exists in contradistinction to 'gothic' harmony, since it is capable of expressing human passions. There is not the slightest connection between the chords of a harmonic system and the passions.
The fact that man finds himself in this wretched condition is due to a fortuitous concurrence of quite separate causes. But if he does not choose to liberate himself he must bear the responsibility if no change for the better occurs. Nature has not made man in such a way that pursuit of his natural desires will of necessity bring him into conflict with the interests of others;, but neither can these same natural inclinations provide the dynamic required for the creation of a 'well-ordered society'.
