M. Coetzee the writer, the maternalline from Balthazar through Louisa to Vera completed the switch from German and Afrikaans to German and English. Balthazar's sojourn in the United States was decisive in bringing this about, just as Coetzee's own sojourn in the United States opened his English to an expansiveness that was invaluable in his writing, especially for someone whose English was not the natural result of being born into the Anglo-Saxon fold. It is not even particularly modernist, although in formaI terms the text that was emerging was avowedly so, perhaps postmodern in its playfuiness. But Coetzee was not writing personal confession, either of a religious or of a secular kind. Later, in the mid-1980s, he wouid turn his attention to the specifie traditions of confessionai writing with an essay on Rousseau, Toistoy and Dostoevsky, but in this first work the introspection is directed at the problem of identity: not at the question of who l am, as mu ch as that of what l am.
