So how is such knowledge possible? The first distinction which Russell introduces is that between knowledge oftruths and knowledge of things. He wants to distinguish two senses of the word 'know' and claim that the saying referred to is seen to be false when this distinction is made apparent. The two senses of 'know' are: (I) The sense in wh ich knowledge is opposed to error. This is the sense in which wh at we know is true. Truth is predicated of propositions and it is in propositions that judgements, beliefs or convictions are expressed.

The secondary qualities thesis Although the scientific argument fails to establish grounds for doubt concerning the existence of the extern al world, it can be used to try and show that the secondary qualities are not part of the external world.
