Having Ernest Benedict, a native Mohawk from Cornwall Island, in class enabled the other students to be exposed to an Iroquoian language. Clarence Gaines, a respected senior professor of English, sat in on the class and encouraged me.
The name remained years later when I stayed away. In the words of a recent correspondent, “My Gram gave you that name in a ceremony many years ago. ” Among the Anthropologists Again Leslie Spier, ethnographer extraordinary, joined the faculty in 1933–34. By that time, Frank Speck at the University of Pennsylvania had become my fieldwork mentor, but Spier did teach several of us what it meant to become professional anthropologists. Having published Havasupai Ethnography (1928), he was then writing Yuman Tribes of the Gila River (1933).
I was told, “That’s Johnson Jimmerson practicing his songs. ” Johnson was then a lad of fifteen, some ten years my junior, and it was soon apparent that his eagerness to master and perform the ceremonial songs amused the older, accomplished singers almost as much as my stumbling effort to acquire the Seneca language. At the suggestion of George Herzog, then at Yale, I had brought an Edison wax cylinder recorder (for then such recording devices were the only ones available) and found Coldspring singers willing to sing their social dance songs into the metal horn.
