From this, Freud makes the following link to a mental mechanism: This gap in consciousness, which might be termed a physiological one, is then widened in the service of repression, till it can swallow up everything that the repressing agency rejects’ (p. 234). Thus the hysteric finds ecstasy in a type of thinking: the orgasm of loss of consciousness. The mechanism of repression is not only sexualised, but becomes a form of auto-erotism, albeit exceedingly well disguised. This solution is rather remarkable.

Hysterical attacks are nothing more, he argues, than ‘an involuntary irruption of day-dreams of this kind’ (p. 160), although they are based on unconscious fantasies which, Freud claims, are ‘identical with the phantasy which served to give him sexual satisfaction during a period of masturbation’ (p. 161). It is interesting to note Freud’s effort to include the many dimensions of the castration complex in his 1924 essay ‘The Dissolution of the Oedipus Complex’. Squarely facing the fact that the child’s masturbations elicit threats of castration from the parents—especially the mother—Freud writes that ‘what brings about the destruction of the child’s phallic genital organisation is this threat of castration’ (p.

The Christian world assigns this rupture to the Devil, who embodies all that disturbs the sacred order. As Dora exemplified, and as Freud failed to see—so taken up was he in advocating the universality of human sexuality—sexual urges seem to destroy the self’s relation to the sacred primary object, unless they can be transported from carnality to spirituality, with the soul as a stand-in for the genital. Later on, Freud would concentrate on another recognition. He saw in the young child’s denial of sexual difference the basis of psychosis, indicating a refusal of reality that would have repercussions later.
