Indeed, despite the commencement of the Oslo peace process (1993–2000), the reality on the ground suggested otherwise, with both sides ironically suffering much higher casualty counts during the so-called peace period. For example, the Second Intifada, which lasted almost five years (2000–2005), saw both sides suffering heavy combatant and civilian casualties, especially the Palestinians, and to a lesser extent, the Israelis (see BBC News 2008).
