In other parts of the world it remained a common alternative to maternal breast-feeding until at least the 1940s. However, wet-nursing was found to be still in use in the late 1980s (Fildes 1988). It is an institution that presents itself as a natural outcome of biologically given gender differences, as a natural consequence of (hetero) sexual activity, and as a natural manifestation of an innate female characteristic, namely the maternal instinct.

On the one hand, giving motherhood a history alerts us to the extent to which motherhood has been a politically contested site for centuries (and certainly not just since the rise of feminism). We need to know that abortion rights are not a new ‘freedom’, but an old resistance to compulsory motherhood regained. We need to know that there were contraceptive methods used in the past that did not entail potentially damaging drugs. We can thus recapture a history in which women were not simply the victims of Nature from which modern science has saved us.

How has employment been ‘significant’ in the social constructions of mothers? Working mothers Full-time motherhood implies that a woman is not required to work for pay, that someone—usually a man or sometimes the state—will provide for her and her child or children. It can also imply that she is barred—by legal means or ideologies—from taking on employment. Alternatively, it can signify that the woman will be doubly burdened by the requirement to conform to the ideal of full-time motherhood while additionally taking on some hours of employment as a secondary activity.
