Chapter 2 BECOMING GERONIMO BECOMING A WARRIOR According to Apache tradition, Geronimo had to assist on at least four raid or war expeditions before being accepted as a full-fledged warrior by the band’s council. During these expeditions, young initiates didn’t fight, but prepared camp, gathered wood and water, cared for the horses, and stood on guard duty at night. This customary apprenticeship prepared young men for the risks and rewards of the warrior’s life without full participation.
However, history soon repeated itself as the Americans began their westward movement, presenting exactly the same issues that the Apaches experienced with the Mexicans.
