NontargetAnimals I ! ontarget animals can be a headacheto the trapper. While the nontargetanimal is in the trap, no furbearer can be caught there. In all likelihood the animal will tear up the set so that it will have to be rebuilt. In releasingthe animal, the trapperrisks being bitten or scratchedfor his trouble. Other nontarget animals plague the trapper. Predatory and scavenging birds will often be caught unless the trapper takes adequateprecaution. Small meat-eatingbirds such as jays will also come to the trap and will be caught.
He kept excellent records of the target and nontarget animals caught. He was after coyote, so technically the other animals were nontarget, but all were furbearersand would be considered a target speciesby a trapper. During the same period of time he caught six vultures, three rock squirrels, two porcupines, two cottontail rabbits, one iackrabbit, one raven, one horned owl, and one dog, for a total of seventeennontargetanimals. These nontarget catchesfor sixty-two target catchesis not a bad average, particularly when one considersthat the trapper was inexperienced.
The traps should be completely dry if waxing by the pure-wax method. Most of the skins are presentedcased,or tube- 31 GETTING READY skinned. When animals are skinned in this manner the trapper must have a way to allow the pelt to dry to the proper dimension with no wrinkling or shrinking. The drying board, or stretcher, servesthis purpose. There are three general types of drying boards, and each will do the iob if properly used. The smaller furs of a species may overstretch a bit, and the larger ones may not stretch to their full potential.
