Other tasks were divided up logistically as follows: • The GU effort was directed at the infrastructure of the workshop. They also concentrated on issues related to deaf STEM professionals, including the hiring of interpreters.

Choosing biographies of historical women scientists who had struggled with far more daunting challenges than our generation was particularly effective in this regard. The books assigned were Brenda Maddox’s Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA (Maddox, 2002) and Barbara Goldsmith’s Obsessive Genius: The Inner World of Marie Curie (Goldsmith, 2005). The same book was assigned to everyone. The different books were used for different years of the workshop. Every year, we planned more relaxing activities for this second evening, off campus if possible, so that participants could relax and share experiences of a kind different from the intensity of the daytime sessions, in a separate and informal environment.
