Choosing biographies of historical women scientists who had struggled with far more daunting challenges than our generation was particularly effective in this regard. The same book was assigned to everyone. The different books were used for different years of the workshop. Every year, we planned more relaxing activities for this second evening, off campus if possible, so that participants could relax and share experiences of a kind different from the intensity of the daytime sessions, in a separate and informal environment.
