In this chapter we aim to explore the nature and delivery of classroom knowledge from a feminist perspective. In doing so we have two broad aims: to provide a summary of the feminist critique of classroom knowledges and curricula (to deconstruct), and to discuss examples of feminist pedagogy and approaches to the curriculum (to reconstruct). The chapter is in four main sections. First, there is an overview of the ways in which gender relations are enmeshed in the discourses and practices of the curriculum.
In mathematics and science subject areas, for example, women are still under-represented both in terms of actual numbers and in terms of senior posts, despite such educational projects as, for example, Girls into Science and Technology (GIST) and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) in the UK (Henwood 1996, Whyte 1986). These projects were aimed at encouraging girls into science and technological subjects at school and as an educational career. Indeed, the overall success of such initiatives has been called into question.
Forty-four articles are cited on this point in Thorne et al. (1983), including Harrison (1975), who discovered some American adolescents studying ‘the evolution of man’ who believed that only males had evolved! Second, the body of knowledge that is presented and the levels of understanding that are assumed are caught up in gender-power conceptualizations and relations (Foucault 1977). Walkerdine’s (1988) work on the implications of gender relations in the knowledge and understanding base of the discourse of mathematical education is an example here.
