Extending the Burkeian System: Motives for Growth and Development No system of analysis is complete, for every scheme is shaped by the circumstances that brought the method into existence. 12 Circumstances change and alternative assessment methods become more appropriate.
A concerted effort must be employed, which requires that the system be altered and changed as new information and new kinds of information are encountered. Even on a methodological level, Burke's system must be reconsidered. Burke has provided explicit and convenient frameworks that invite their use without major modification. For example, Burke's pentad of termsact, scene, purpose, agency, and agentfor Page xv analyzing motives appears almost universal, readily applied to any situation. 13 As I have argued elsewhere the system lends itself to being "viewed as a kind of 'tool box' from which any scheme of concepts can be extracted for any purpose.
The final story in the latter, "The Anaesthetic Revelation of Herone Liddell," was written and published in 1957. These stories, plus Burke's novel, Towards a Better Life (1932), make up his total output as a fiction writer. Read in the context of Burke's overall development and career, The White Oxen tells us some interesting and valuable things about Burke's beginnings. His earliest serious aspiration as a writer was to become an American Flaubert, or a writer whose whole life was dedicated to his craft, and whose craft was the carefully written, well-made story or novel.
