This is not to say that indigenous peoples do not make ecological mistakes at times, but often these are self-correcting, and a deeper probing of activities may indeed show that their so-called mistakes provided long-term gains over short-term goals. Given that indigenous decision making is often holistically based, or inclusive of many cultural as well as environmental parameters, superficial examination rarely leads to understanding. Only a more thorough and complex set of research techniques and methods involving careful analyses will give good results.
