Montessori developed her methods by building on her observations that learning is brought about by human tendencies to do – to act, to explore, to create. She observed that learning happened through repetition, concentration, and imagination, and that learners needed to be independent in their actions whilst making their own decisions about what ‘work’ they should do and learning how to control their own actions.

He opened his own school with a colleague and settled at Keilhau in 1818. It was here that Froebel began to put many of his educational theories into practice in the school that took the form of an educational community. Whilst there, he wrote various articles, however his most important work was Menschenerziehung, The Education of Man. Key contributions to early childhood education In 1826 Froebel published his most important work, The Education of Man. This was a presentation of the principles and methods that had been pursued at Keilhau.

In 1859 the family moved to Vienna and in 1873 Freud graduated from secondary school able to read in several languages. He then studied medicine at Vienna University, and after graduating went on to work at the Vienna General Hospital. His early career involved him in research in psychiatry and neurology, and he collaborated with Josef Breuer in the treatment of hysteria through the use of hypnosis. After military service in 1880 he rejected medical practice in favour of research and teaching, but nevertheless graduated with a degree in medicine in 1881.
