Social Exchange Theory The social exchange theory of divorce focuses on the period preceding the divorce, in which people evaluate their relationship in terms of costs and benefits. How good the marriage is depends on the person’s satisfaction with his or her share of the rewards and costs. Rewards include love, support, companionship, emotional security, social status and connections, and sexual relations, as well as property, financial resources, and assistance with daily tasks; costs may include extra work and responsibilities, annoying habits, or limited individual choices and freedoms.
