Manufacturing Flexibility is generally visible because the major solution for surviving in current markets characterised through brief lead occasions, tight product tolerances, strain on charges, widespread alterations of call for and non-stop evolution of goods. although, the competitiveness of an organization will be negatively laid low with capital extensive investments in procedure flexibility. certainly construction contexts characterised by way of mid to excessive call for quantity of good pointed out households of goods in non-stop evolution as a rule don't require the top point of flexibleness. Designing production platforms that optimally fulfill the creation necessities represents a truly complicated challenge, on the grounds that elements starting from production technique to procedure making plans, and from situation research to functionality overview has to be thought of over the procedure lifecycle. The ebook addresses those interdependencies presenting an built-in method of versatile construction method layout. for the reason that conventional process architectures usually are not continually the most productive strategy to face new construction contexts a brand new production method structure named centred Flexibility production structures – FFMSs is additionally brought. certainly the specific layout of suppleness may end up in hybrid platforms, i.e. automatic built-in structures such as common function and committed machines. it is a key factor of FFMSs that are designed to accomplish an optimum stability among flexibility and productiveness at procedure level.

Case studies let to capture an interesting set of approaches to flexibility used by the interviewed firms, from both system vendors’ and system users’ standpoints. The second section covers a proposal for a conceptual model that can be used for reading and understanding the findings of empirical research. The chapter takes the concepts of manufacturing flexibility, focused flexibility and related machine solutions for granted, as a thorough discussion and related literature are already proposed in Chap.
Sage publications, London Chapter 3 A Review on Manufacturing Flexibility Walter Terkaj, Tullio Tolio and Anna Valente Abstract The topic of manufacturing flexibility has been addressed by many scientific contributions in the past years, thus highlighting the relevance of the problem both at industrial and academic level. Internal and external issues need to be faced at the same time when designing a manufacturing system and its flexibility; indeed, products and processes are easily and frequently changed by market and manufacturing strategies, while production systems must cope with relevant inertia which slow down their changes.
According to the authors, flexible manufacturing systems often fail because firms lack either these forms of competence, or because they pursue approaches that are not coherent on these two aspects. In order to achieve a deeper understanding of these concepts, this chapter adopts an approach similar to the one used by Belassi and Fadlalla (1998), who examined the process and the dimensions through which competencies in flexible manufacturing are developed. With regard to flexibility competence, this framework can be integrated with the basic ‘‘manufacturing system development process’’ that has been followed within this book.
