Lee (1997), the historical immigration of Asian Americans can be viewed in three waves. Because of various laws prohibiting emigration, these immigrants often came from the upper echelon of society (Ichihashi 1932; Ichioka 2006). The second wave, beginning in the mid-1960s, included Asian immigrants from the Philippines, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The last wave started in the mid-1970s with groups emigrating from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
