Whereas numerous high level language machines have already been defined or realised, there has been no architecture defined yet to support a real time language. In a constructive way it is shown, that this can indeed be done based on available technology. Thus, an architecture is described in Chapter 5, which integrates the hardware with the operating system kernel software. The kernel directly supports the real time features of extended PEARL, to close the "semantic gap" between the requirements of hard real time applications and the architecture.

The control problem studied on this single-input-single-output configuration is the one of water level control. The second configuration is obtained by connecting the reservoirs of two basic configurations via a valve controlled pipe. This configuration is also used to study level control, this time in the two interacting reservoirs. The third and most complex configuration is constructed from making the two feeding pipes of the second configuration go to a mixing chamber, and taking two new feeding pipes from the chamber to the reservoirs through heat exchangers.

Individual boiler and other data obtained by controllers are collected and brought to a mainframe computer, which performs boiler optimisation (economic boiler load allocation), printing of logs and reports, historical data gathering, colour graphics, multipoint trends, efficiency, mass balance, and electrical power computation. Most control functions are periodic. The periods vary from several seconds to 24 hours. Boiler load reallocation and other functions can be invoked by human operators. The control system is, nevertheless, able to operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a minimum of human interference.
