Although there is a history of comics as collectors' items, the extreme commodification of the hobby is fairly recent. In the golden age of comics, comic books were ephemera. A kid would read a copy of Marvel Mystery Comics and then trade it for a copy of All-Star Comics. The new owner would then trade the issue for Detective Comics, and the third kid would trade it for something else. This process would continue until all of a group of friends had read the comic or until the comic fell apart. Because comic books were printed on cheap paper and bound together with weak staples, the books did not last a Page 15 long time.
